I hadn’t heard about this however what a great idea. The N.C. Transportation Museum in Spencer has setup two train trips in the fall to travel either to Asheville or Charlottesville. The trains will leave early in the morning and offer three levels of service and move through the piedmont through the foothills and across multiple rivers then climb the Blue Ridge to reach their final destination.

The Asheville trip will leave Spencer on Sunday November 1 at 7 a.m. There are three levels of service or ticket from First Class with an onboard dinner to Coach with basic seating and no onboard service ranging from $240 to $140. The train will arrive in Asheville around noon and allow riders to spend three hours in Biltmore Village then board for the return at 3 p.m. finally arriving in Spencer around 8 p.m.

The Charlottesville trip will similarly leave on October 31 from Spencer at 7 a.m. and travel north through Greensboro crossing the Dan and James rivers arriving in Charlottesville at noon where passengers can spend three hours in and around the downtown area for shopping and lunch then board for the return at 3 p.m. to arrive back in Spencer around 8 p.m. The “Virginia Autumn Special” will stop in Greensboro at 8 a.m. and on the return trip at 7 p.m. allowing for departing from Greensboro instead of Spencer if you choose.

Although the pricing seems a bit steep to me this would surely be a great way to spend a day. If you have taken one of these trips in the past please post back and share your experience or even pictures if you have them.
